The Art of Volunteering

Volunteering is an act, or movement, that is not highly prevalent in South Africa. Volunteers are able to make a difference in areas, which normally deserve services rendered of a similar nature under normal conditions.

Due to the unprecedented high unemployment statistics in the country, people normally prefer to be remunerated for services rendered, and understandably so.

The question is how does one change this behaviour to create an environment more conducive for volunteers? In short, it all starts with creating stronger awareness and education around the importance of volunteerism. Especially in light of the unemployment pandemic, and provide people with opportunities to become more active, engaged and stimulated. These opportunities have the potential to become permanent positions in the future and also ideal to develop and grow certain skills.

“Volunteerism” affords the volunteer to become selfless and have a closer affinity to humanity and the act of giving without a tangible reward. Hypothetically, it should be introduced at pre-school and school level where the young mind is groomed from an early age about the importance of volunteerism. It also assists with educating and understanding of what volunteerism entails.

All sectors of society can benefit from volunteerism. It should not only be reserved for parents volunteering at the schools fundraising event. Sports in particular can also benefit with the presence of more volunteers; especially coaching and development of athletes. As well as volunteering at sporting events to ensure the advancement of sports and participants alike.

In retrospect one should create a movement of volunteerism within the family environment as a possible departure point. The Family unit should volunteer together and by doing so also spend much needed quality time together.
