12 Hour Endurance Race
The Sports Trust Cycling Club attended its first Killarney 12 hour race hosted by the PPA on Sunday 8th April 2018. We entered two teams for the event. Team One was Captained by Vuyo Mavuya and comprised of Vuyolwethu Nkomo, Siphamandla Poto and Olwethu Nodolo. Team Two was captained by Chadwin Andrews and included Kyle Martin, Ebrahim Joseph and Siphamandla Marubeni on the day.
Both teams had excellent races despite the weather conditions. At first the wind challenged the riders and later they had to battle in the heat. The riders had to circumnavigate the 3.25km Killarney circuit in relay format. There were nine 4-men teams who competed and we were humbly surprised to find out that after 9 hours of racing our 1st Team was placed joint 3rd with 97 laps completed. The Team really put in some solid ground work; and with 30 minutes to go, we still occupied the joint 3rd position. We were confident that our Captain Vuyo will bring home the podium position and after a massive effort we reached our goal in style by taking 3rd place by 2 laps. Our B team finished in 6th position and 30 laps off the pace of the A team. It is safe to say that they completed 100 laps. We commend both teams for the effort put in and the camaraderie and support they gave each other.
On 22nd April the Sports Trust Cycling Club took the opportunity to compete in the PPA CycloSportif #2 event hosted at Simonsvlei in Paarl. Thirteen of our top riders participated in near perfect weather conditions.
The race course comprised of 97 hard kilometres, which included 887 metres of climbing, summiting on Hellshoogte Pass at 372 metres above sea level followed by numerous undulating hills.
Our team did not disappoint and gave their best and showed their worth with Captain Vuyo Mavuya finishing in the top 10 overall with a time of 2h30 at an average speed of 38.71 km/hour. Overall good results for the Sports Trust Cycling Club who competed and participated in the group seeded categories . All their hard work and training is paying off and we are looking forward to further PPA CycloSportif and WP league races leading to the 1 Tonner and Coronation Double Century at the end of the year.
Vuyo gets to ride for Team Bäckstedt Hot Chillee
Vuyo Mavuyo recently did us proud and won the Yellow Jersey for under 23 age category at the Bäckstedt Chillee Young Rider Prologue 2018. He has since been selected to train with Team Bäckstedt HotChillee. An awesome achievement and great opportunity for Vuyo.
He will receive various forms of assistance including: Wattbike testing, monitoring of performance at races, attending A Young Rider Summer in Cape Town, with key influencers from the cycling industry and an opportunity to guest ride for Team Bäckstedt HotChillee. We congratulate you ‘’Cappie’’ on this selection and will watch your performance closely.
When cornering, ensure your outside pedal is at the lowest position, with pressure being placed on it. This will give you more grip, particularly in wet condition, and makes sliding out less likely.
