Nedbank and The Sports Trust enabled more than 200 students from 10 schools to participate in this year's KZN Youth Run. This run was supported by KwaZulu-Natal Athletics and the provincial Department of Sport and Recreation, offering both individual runners and school teams the opportunity to enter and win cash prizes. Sports nutritionist 32Gi provided ready-to-drink sachets for the runners on the day.
Since its inception in 2012 the Nedbank Development Running Programme has supported 19 schools and 1 302 learners in an effort to introduce road running and cross-country to disadvantaged schools and communities in KwaZulu-Natal. Nedbank funds the programme, which is implemented by The Sports Trust, a sport development non-profit organisation. Last year the programme identified an elite development team and three of the athletes were chosen to attend the KZN Academy of Sport – Nonhlanhla Gcina, Nomcebo Mtshali and Aphelele Jileka.
'We're excited to be part of this programme, and through it we've been able to progress in our training and have the opportunity to focus on achieving our aspirations of one day competing in the Comrades Marathon,' said Gcina.
'As a bank for all, Nedbank is committed to doing good in the communities we serve. This investment forms a significant part of our sports development programme in partnership with The Sports Trust and has the potential to produce future champions,' said Tobie Badenhorst, Head of Sponsorship and Cause Marketing at Nedbank.’
Anita Mathews, Executive Director of The Sports Trust, said: 'Nedbank is a valued trustee of The Sports Trust and provides us with the necessary funding to implement sustainable sports programmes in disadvantaged schools and communities. This is essential for talent identification and the transformation process in sport. We thank Nedbank and KwaZulu-Natal Athletics for helping us to continue to enhance education through sport.'
