Running Development Programme
The Nedbank Running Development Programme was implemented in 2012 to support running at disadvantaged schools. Learners are supplied with good quality running kits and shoes to assist them in training, as well as bettering their overall times and performance.
They are offered the opportunity to compete in a number of races, including cross-country races and the annual 10 km Youth Run in KwaZulu-Natal, which takes place the day before the Comrades Marathon each year. In 2016 Nedbank and The Sports Trust enabled more than 200 students from 10 schools to participate in the Youth Run. Since inception the programme has enabled over 700 learners to take part in the race. KZN Athletics and the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Sports and Recreation support the Youth Run.
Since 2016 Nedbank and The Sports Trust have invested in an elite long distance development team. Learners with potential are selected for admission to the KZN Academy of Sports, where they receive focused training after school each day. They aspire to become professional athletes and future Comrades Marathon winners.
